The modern biology lab demands much more than a microscope and staining. Measuring photosynthesis and cellular respiration in real time, recording an electrocardiogram in class, monitoring dissolved oxygen in a water sample, or quantifying enzyme activity — these experiments used to require expensive and difficult-to-operate equipment. With Vernier's GDP-BIO-ODX package, all of that is solved: eleven Go Direct sensors designed for biology, award-winning free software, and 31 structured experiments ready for day one.
Vernier has spent more than four decades developing technology for science education, and the GDP-BIO-ODX is their comprehensive solution for high school, AP and first-year university biology. All sensors are wireless, compatible with tablets, Chromebooks, phones and computers, and connect directly to Graphical Analysis with no additional setup.
Graphical Analysis: the award-winning software included at no cost
The entire Go Direct ecosystem works with Graphical Analysis, the free Vernier app for iOS, Android, Chromebook, Mac and Windows. The software automatically detects any connected sensor and configures graph axes according to the type of variable being measured.
Graphical Analysis Pro, the premium version, adds advanced statistical analysis, curve fitting and numerical calculus. It won the three most important educational technology awards in 2020 and 2021. The free version covers all biology curriculum experiments.
Graphical Analysis (free version) is available to all Vernier Go Direct sensor users at no extra cost. Download it from the App Store, Google Play, Chrome Web Store, or at vernier.com.
The GDP-BIO-ODX package: 11 sensors for complete biology
The Biology Go Direct® Standard Package (GDP-BIO-ODX) groups eleven Go Direct sensors selected to cover the major areas of biology: biochemistry, cellular physiology, aquatic ecology and human physiology, plus two BioChambers for metabolism experiments.
Biology Go Direct® Standard Package (GDP-BIO-ODX) – 11 Go Direct sensors for high school, AP and university biology
All sensors connect via Bluetooth or USB directly to the teacher's or student's device. No additional interface or external data acquisition hardware is required.
The package also includes BioChamber 250 (for seeds, insects or yeast) and BioChamber 2000 (for whole plants), used with GDX-O2, GDX-CO2 and GDX-GP to quantify metabolic processes in real time.
Everything is complemented by Biology with Vernier, which includes 31 structured experiments for AP, IB and first-year university biology.
What experiments can you do with the GDP-BIO-ODX?
The 11 sensors and BioChambers in the GDP-BIO-ODX, combined with Biology with Vernier and Graphical Analysis, cover the four main blocks of school and university biology:
Biochemistry and Enzymes
- Enzyme kinetics: catalase, amylase and pepsin activity with GDX-CLMTR
- Effect of temperature and pH on enzyme activity (GDX-TMP + GDX-PH + GDX-CLMTR)
- Diffusion and osmosis: conductivity changes as a function of concentration (GDX-CON)
- Active and passive transport across semipermeable membranes
Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
- Photosynthesis rate: O₂ production as a function of light intensity (GDX-O2 + BioChambers)
- Light compensation point: photosynthesis vs. respiration in real time
- Aerobic cellular respiration: O₂ consumption and CO₂ production (GDX-O2 + GDX-CO2)
- Alcoholic fermentation in yeast: CO₂ production at different temperatures
- Seed germination: respiration over time with BioChamber 250
Ecology and Environmental Quality
- Dissolved oxygen in river, lake and aquarium samples (GDX-ODO)
- Primary productivity of algae in BioChambers (GDX-O2 + GDX-CO2)
- Conductivity as a water quality and ionic contamination indicator (GDX-CON)
- pH and acidification of natural water samples (GDX-PH)
- Effect of temperature on the metabolism of aquatic organisms
Human Physiology
- EKG at rest and after exercise: cardiac wave analysis (GDX-EKG)
- Heart rate and variability: effects of posture and exercise (GDX-OHR)
- Breathing rate and ventilatory control (GDX-RB)
- Combined effect of exercise on heart rate and breathing rate
The GDP-BIO-ODX covers biochemistry, cellular physiology, ecology and human physiology in a single package. The GDX-EKG is a university-level physiology instrument normally purchased separately.
From the box to the experiment: that simple
Setting up any Go Direct sensor follows the same four-step process:
- Download Graphical Analysis for free on your device (App Store, Google Play, Chromebook or computer).
- Turn on the Go Direct sensor. The LED will flash, indicating it is ready to connect.
- Select the sensor in the app. Graphical Analysis detects it automatically via Bluetooth or USB and sets up graph axes for the measurement type.
- Press Collect and data starts graphing in real time. The experiment is already underway.
For multi-sensor experiments — like simultaneously recording O₂, CO₂ and temperature during a photosynthesis experiment, or monitoring EKG and heart rate in parallel — Graphical Analysis automatically synchronizes all sensors on a single screen.
Training included: the added value of buying from Districalc
Experimental biology requires more than good sensors: it needs teachers who can design lab activities aligned with the curriculum, interpret Graphical Analysis outputs, and connect data to textbook concepts. That is why every Vernier sensor purchase through Districalc includes training.
Districalc is the official Vernier distributor for Latin America and the Caribbean, with a presence in more than 20 countries since 1981. For more than four decades we have supported schools and universities in implementing STEM technology.
"Watching a student record their own electrocardiogram and understand in real time what is happening in their heart is one of the most powerful experiences in the biology lab. That is what the GDP-BIO-ODX makes possible."— Camilo Wartenberg, Director of Districalc
The included training covers practical use of the sensors, Graphical Analysis configuration for biology experiments, running experiments from Biology with Vernier, and pedagogical strategies for integrating real-time data into the curriculum.
Districalc offers ongoing technical and pedagogical support to all institutions that purchase Vernier technology. Over 40 years of experience distributing educational technology in Latin America and the Caribbean back every sale.
The biology lab that covers the entire curriculum from day one
The GDP-BIO-ODX package brings together in a single purchase everything an AP or university biology lab needs: sensors for biochemistry, cellular physiology, aquatic ecology and human physiology, BioChambers for metabolism, award-winning free software, and 31 structured experiments ready to use.
The included GDX-EKG allows students to record real electrocardiograms in class — an experience normally reserved for advanced university physiology. Its inclusion in the GDP-BIO-ODX gives this package an exceptional cost-to-equipment ratio.
